Thread Call is an interactive sound installation that evokes the form of a childhood cup-and-string telephone, exploring the transformations and disruptions that occur as one person’s voice travels toward another.
When a visitor speaks into one cup, their voice does not travel unchanged along the invisible thread. Instead, it is fragmented, delayed, and transformed in real time into unfamiliar sounds that emerge from the cup at the opposite end. Light responding to the voice lingers along the thread before gradually fading, visually revealing the traces of speech and the time required for its transmission.
Can the words we speak ever reach another person intact? The speaker cannot know how their voice has been transformed in transit, while the listener encounters the speaker through a voice that has already become something different. In the work, the “thread” serves both as a channel connecting two people and as a boundary where distance and distortion arise.
Rather than asking whether perfect transmission is possible, Thread Call considers what a voice loses—and what it newly acquires—on its way toward another person. Through transformed voices and fading traces of light, the work suggests that communication is not the intact transfer of information, but a process continually remade through different senses and interpretations.
